Strathallan School Boarding Accommodation

Ogilvie were awarded the Design and Construction of a new boarding house, within the grounds of Strathallan School.  We successfully designed and constructed the building with 60-bed accommodation over three floors alongside a tutor’s flat and housemaster’s house.  There were major associated external works comprising roads, landscaping and drainage.  A significant challenge associated with the project was the design of a Helical Steel Stair v case within the heart of the 60-bed accommodation.

New utility connections were required for the new build and these were installed with no impact on the existing school’s operations.

The school continued to operate during the construction period and we were responsible for implementing traffic management measures such as speed limits, signage and ensuring deliveries to site were restricted to outside school operating hours.

Working alongside SEPA and the local authority, we put in place the necessary protective measures ensuring that we did not impact on the surrounding trees, waterways and playing fields adjacent to the site.

MLD and SEBD Schools

Ogilvie undertook the Construction of two new schools and associated sports facilities for Edinburgh City Council, servicing pupils with Medium Learning Difficulties and Social and Emotional Behavioural Difficulties.  Both projects were carried out in 3 sections as part of a multi-site Contract.

SEBD School

Ogilvie undertook the traditional construction of the £5.4m school in two sections while the existing school remained fully operational.

Section 1 comprised the construction of the two storey school including administration facilities, sports centre, associated landscaping and playgrounds.

Section 2 comprised the demolition of the existing school, associated landscaping and construction of all weather pitches.

MLD School -

Ogilvie undertook the traditional construction of the £7m school in three sections while the exisiting school remained fully operational.

Section 1: the construction of a 2 storey school inclusive of administration facilities, associated landscaping, car park, access road and playground facilities adjacent to the existing Currie High School.

For the successful completion of Section 2, Ogilvie undertook the construction of a new sports hall built between two existing, fully functional school buildings.

In Section 3 of the project, we carried out internal alterations to the existing sports changing area.

The construction period took place within a live school urban environment, adjoining housing scheme and the presence of a burn running through the middle of the site.  We developed a strong relationship with SEPA to ensure that we did not have a negative impact on the burn, constructing a retaining wall down the side of the burn.

We are committed to ensuring that we leave our sites in better condition than when we started.  For the construction of the retaining walls at the MLD School, we used materials which would allow moss to grow over the walls and fit in with the surrounding environment.

Falkirk Schools PPP Project

Ogilvie, as part of Gateway Falkirk, undertook the design and construction of three new high schools under the second Falkirk Schools PPP.

St Mungo's High School

1600 Pupils

£25.4m

Denny High School

1700 Pupils

£31m

Falkirk High School

1600 Pupils

£24.6m

The projects encompassed the design, construction, funding and operation of three replacement new secondary community schools (all with swimming pools, synthetic pitches, fitness rooms and dance studios).  The facilities all have significant community usage incorporated in the design and operational specifications.  All three schools were designed and constructed to improve the sustainability of the schools and reduce their carbon footprint.

One of the principal factors in the successful completion of these projects was that in addition to being some of the largest local employers, Ogilvie utilised their local Small Enterprise supply chain to undertake significant sub-contract works, providing pride, motivation and incentive to much of the local construction community.
